Woodbridge College Music

Overview of Courses

Grade 9 Music

Prerequisite: none

This course emphasizes the performance of music at a level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill and is aimed at developing technique, sensitivity, and imagination. Students will participate in creative activities that teach them to listen with understanding. They will also learn correct musical terminology and its appropriate use.

Grade 10 Music

Prerequisite: none

This course emphasizes performance of music at an intermediate level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill. Student learning will include participating in creative activities and listening perceptively. Students will also be required to develop a thorough understanding of the language of music, including the elements, terminology, and history.

Grade 11 College Music

Prerequisite: Grade 9 Music or Grade 10 Music

This course emphasizes the appreciation, analysis, and performance of various kinds of music, including baroque and classical music, popular music, and Canadian and non-Western music. Students will perform technical exercises and appropriate repertoire, complete detailed creative activities, and analyze and evaluate live and recorded performances. They will continue to increase their understanding of the elements of music while developing their technical and imaginative abilities.

Grade 11 Music

Prerequisite: Grade 9 Music or Grade 10 Music

This course develops students' artistic knowledge and skills through the performance of music and the preparation of music productions. Students will perform appropriate works, particular works in contemporary popular styles. Independently and in groups, they will also plan, market, and produce music productions, making use of appropriate technology and will evaluate the results.

Grade 12 Vocal Music

Prerequisite: none

Vocal skills will be developed with more emphasis on individual and ensemble performances. More difficult vocal repertoire will be studied and students will provide leadership to other students. Ear training, sight reading, creative activities, and music history will be studied.

Grade 12 Instrumental Music

Prerequisite: none
Evolving qualities of students' musical individuality and expression. Fine tuning development of performance skills with closer attention to solo and ensemble performance. More difficult repertoire will be studied and students will be encouraged to provide leadership. Composition, and recording production skills will be further applied. Interpretation, phrasing details, and improvisational modes identified and explored in pursuit of artistic excellence. Students will examine intervals and chord relationships, considering harmonization of original ideas. Understanding the ways of music and finding one's own sound, gained through experience and fluency with performance.
