Courses Overview

Grade 9 Visual Arts

Prerequisite: None
This course offers an overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques, and styles. They will learn and use methods of analysis and criticism and will study the characteristics of particular historical art periods and a selection of Canadian art and the art of other cultures.
 

Grade 10 Visual Arts

Prerequisite: None
This course emphasizes learning through practice; building on what students know; and introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic thinking and experimentation. Student learning will include the refined application of the elements and principles of design, incorporating the creative and design processes, and the relationship between form and content. Students will also learn about the connections between works of art and their historical contexts. Course objectives may be achieved either through a comprehensive program or through a program focused on a particular art form(e.g., drawing, painting).
 

Grade 11 Visual Arts

Prerequisite: Grade 9 Visual Arts or Grade 10 Visual Arts
This course focuses on studio activities in one or more of the visual arts. Students will create art works that explore a wide range of subject matter, and will evaluate art works, providing grounds for their aesthetic judgments. They will also examine historical and cultural contexts of Western art (including Canadian art) and art from various world cultures to support their study of specific media
 

Grade 12 Visual Arts

Prerequisite: Grade 10 Visual Arts or Grade 11 Visual Arts
By the time art students have reached Grade 12, it is expected that they have acquired proficiency in handling any media. They should be capable of organizing their thoughts and their materials in order to be able to address problems of considerable complexity. In this course, students concentrate on the meaning of a work of art. Through their work in drawing, painting, sculpture, and print-making students continually investigate the reconciliation of form and content. Every studio project required that the student will make a personal selection as to subject matter and media. The principles of composition and studio technique skills will be reviewed. Art history makes up 25% of the course. The history/criticism component continues the comparative study of artworks including masterpieces of the Renaissance. They will continue to maintain and supplement their information files. Sketchbook assignments will continue to be given throughout the year.
 

Grade 12 Graphic Design

Prerequisite: Grade 10 Visual Arts or Grade 11 Visual Arts
Students will be involved in layout design. Graphic design will expose students to the fundamentals of the advertising media, including product packaging design, brochures, greeting cards, yearbook design, logo design, illustrations for magazines and poster designs. Students will become familiar with the terminology used in the Graphic Design business. They will visualize ideas, prepare thumbnail sketches, use layouts to take their thumbnails to full-size, and prepare presentation comprehensives. They will use computers in their work. Students will have a portfolio of their work for post secondary studies.
 

Grade 12 Photography

Prerequisite: Grade 11 Visual Arts
Building upon the knowledge and skills gained in the introductory photography course, Intermediate Photography will concentrate on the technical and creative expansion of the medium. Students will be encouraged to develop a personal style in both the production and presentation of their photographs. Experimentation will be stressed through the use of traditional and contemporary practices. Silver prints, hand tinting, xerography, non-silver and contact processes will be explored with a professional approach to exhibition, presentation and critique. Students MUST have access to a manual function 35 mm single lens reflex camera for this course. (Camera rental may be available through the school.)
