PART 2 – YOUR STUDY ENVIRONMENT
Sketch your “study area”. Where is it? What does it look
like? What does it sound like? What does it feel like?
Here are some things to consider when setting up your STUDY ENVIRONMENT:
Modify your diagram to make changes to your study environment where necessary.
- Study in the same place everyday. If you always work in this one
place your brain will begin to switch into "study mode" as
soon as you sit down. In other words, you "activate" your
ability to concentrate.
- Take into consideration: size of work area, light, temperature, physical
comfort, noise level, ventilation, door available that can be closed
if necessary, clock available to help you budget time.
- Be well-equipped. Have your notes, textbooks, other reference books.
Organise your materials so that they are ALWAYS at hand. There is nothing
worse than interrupting study to find something that should have been
there already. Keep it tidy and organised! If you always have to search
for materials you will waste valuable time and your concentration will
fade.
- Tackle one task at a time.
- Avoid distractions. These include avoiding clutter, asking for privacy,
not answering the phone or watching T.V. during studying time, family
interruptions. This will allow you to concentrate better and therefore
be more productive.
- If you get tired or bored, switch task/activity, subject, or environment.
Stop studying when you are no longer being productive.
